Eighty-two minus twenty-four plus thirty-two

IMG_5087 IMG_5089 IMG_5090Like I’ve said before – it’s a hard retired life here in the household.

I know, I’m jealous, too.

Today we celebrated Grandma’s eighty-second birthday. She requested my carrot cake (the whole wheat does not negate the sugar, oil and egg content – but it is still my favorite carrot cake) with cream cheese frosting. Lots and lots of cream cheese frosting.

Issue: it wouldn’t come out of the pan. I made it last night so it had all night to be left alone.Thankfully, and with the help of several gin and tonics, this morning it was no longer attached to the pan. Obviously, the help was for me, not the cake.IMG_5096

IMG_5101The cream cheese was sprinkled with gold sanding sugar, which Grandma noticed right away. I decided twenty-four candles were enough, lovely little beeswax tapers. IMG_5107IMG_5111


We ate a lovely corned beef dinner and cake and watched The Queen of the West come in down the Columbia River on an iPad app and in real time. And Savannah modeled Grandma’s latest crocheted blanket – Savannah loves to wear cozy things – she was quite proud.


And at home, because there is a Fifteen-year-old present, the smell of peanut butter pretzel brownies filled the house. We now know: thirty-two minutes. Still edible, just knowledge for next time. IMG_5109Because there will be a next time.

And for next week, some homemade kahlua is mellowing and some ginger-infused vodka is strengthening. IMG_5092

Tomorrow, more adventures await, I’m sure. Visit with old friends. Make a few phone calls. Tomorrow will be a day between celebrations. Monday is The Gentelman’s and my first anniversary. Another celebration, but no cake. Which is good, it would be hard to top that carrot cake and cream cheese frosting with gold sprinkles and beeswax tapers.
